Top Five Self-Tanning Products Under $50 – Airbrush Tan Tips

  • Exfoliating before self-tanning will give you the best results.
  • Using a tan extender can prolong the life of your tan, as can using a daily moisturizer.
  • It is not necessary to pay a high salon fee to achieve a natural-looking sunless tan.

=”article_text”>

As a naturally extremely fair-skinned person who’s always been prone to burning, I’ve spent years on a quest for a natural-looking, affordable sunless tan. These five products are the best I’ve found and the least likely to leave you streaky or orange!

1.) Mystic Tan – $12 to $25 per session, depending on which salon you visit. The Mystic Tan systems can be found at a wide variety of locations, from beauty salons/spas to gyms. They are most easily found at tanning salons or at Mystic Tan salons. The Mystic Tan is the closest and most cost-efficient way to emulate the experience of having an aesthetician at a salon or spa hand-airbrush you with self-tanner. Because a personalized treatment like that can cost upwards of $100, and doesn’t necessarily last any longer than a Mystic Tan, this is your next best bet. When you arrive at a Mystic Tan salon, you will be shown a video that teaches you how to get the best results. Pay attention to the video – it really does give genuine advice on how to avoid streaking, white areas around your knuckles and wrists, and too much product on your feet and hands. The self-tanning process itself only takes about thirty seconds total (fourteen to fifteen seconds on each side of your body), and my favorite part is that it dries instantly – you can towel off the excess bronzer, get dressed, and be on your way!

2.) MysticSunless Spray – $20.95 from the Mystic Tan website (www.shopmystictan.com), but they also say that prices might be lower at your local salon. This product claimed to work as well as the Mystic Tan, but without having to go to a salon or pay each time. While it’s definitely more difficult to do the self-tanning yourself instead of standing in a booth and being sprayed, I actually liked having control over where the spray was going. There is a bronzer that shows up instantly and gives a nice light sheen to your skin, and the rest of the color develops over the next four hours. The color itself is quite comparable to what you’d pick up from a Mystic Tan, and it lasted for the same amount of time (around four to five days). There are supplementary products that you can also assume that will extend the life of your tan (my narrate was eight days) or prepare your skin for the self-tanning process. With any self-tanner, I would strongly recommend exfoliating first to create your skin’s surface area as even as possible. The MysticSunless exfoliant is fine, but I found other, less expensive products to be just as good.

3.) Neutrogena MicroMist Sunless Tanning Spray – $11.99 or less at most drugstores. This is a vast drugstore brand that comes in two colors, Medium (which turns you two shades darker than your natural skin color), and Deep (three shades darker). If you’re light-skinned or new to shaded tanning, I would definitely recommend the Medium shade, as errors will be less obvious and easier to factual. I tend to like sprays, because they make it possible to tan hard-to-reach areas like the support, encourage of legs, etc., but if you’re a fan of foams or creams, Neutrogena makes these also (my personal favorites are the Dim Tanning Foam, $10.09, and the Instant Bronze Shaded Tanner and Bronzer, $9.99). As a side note, though you can use these products on your face as well, I would recommend buying a separate tanner that is specifically meant for the face to avoid breakouts and extremely visible mistakes. All of the brands I have listed so far have face-specific tanners as well.

4.) Tantowel Self-Tan Towelette – $19.99 for a box of ten towelettes (www.drugstore.com). These individually wrapped towelettes are pre-soaked with self-tanner. These are extremely convenient if you’re traveling, and develop in a shorter amount of time than most (around three hours). The packaging says that you can apply another after three hours if you want a darker tan, but I have not yet tried that. You have less control over how worthy product comes out at a time than if you’re using a spray/lotion/foam, but the color still comes out evenly. The best use for this product is as a mistake fixer – just swipe it over tan lines or uneven color (I use it between my fingers and toes, since somehow self-tanner never manages to settle well there!). L’Oreal also makes a good self-tan towelette (Sublime Bronze Self-Tanning Towelettes, $9.49 for six) that are available at most local drugstores.

5.) Dove Energy Glow Daily Moisturizer – $7.99 at most drugstores. This lotion comes in Medium and Dark, and has a separate product for employ on the face. This is one of several moisturizers that can be old daily, and unlike other self-tanners, only deposits a small amount of color at a time. If you’re looking for immediate, dramatic results, exercise another product – but this one is practically mistake-proof, and over the course of two days to a week, your skin will turn several shades darker. My favorite fragment of this is that I can use it anytime and not pains that streaks or missed areas will suddenly turn up in the middle of dinner or a night out. Two other comparable products are Jergens Natural Glow Daily Moisturizer ($7.19 at drugstores) and Aveeno Active Naturals Continuous Radiance Moisturizing Lotion ($8.89 at drugstores, great for people with more sensitive skin).

How to Get Great Self Tanning Results – Spray Tanning Lotion

  • Self tanning creams and lotions are hard to apply for a novice.
  • Following simple skin care measures can increas your odds of getting a better sad tan.
  • Self tanning takes time and preperation and should never been done on the same day as an outing.

Spring has arrived. Many of the states throughout the country have experienced temperatures more reminiscent of May than March. Sunny California is not particular sunny during the months of January, February and March; in fact those are the wettest months of the year. This year however, the arrival of spring has brought warmer weather and all this warm weather can mean only one thing. It’s bathing suit season.

Sun worshipers are already laying out their towels and beach bunnies have begun to infiltrate the coastlines. In order to note off that great new swim suit, a girl’s got to have a decent tan, right? Right! The only problem with that theory is the risk of skin cancer. Since no one wants to eye pale and ghostly in their beach wear I’m offering you a ton of tips on the alternative, expedient way to glow golden and bronzed without all those sun rays.

Self tanning has been around for a long, long time. Self tanning is the process of applying cream, lotion, or spray to the skin so that the results are a semi-permanent change in the color of the skin, thus the tan. Normally a self tan, or sunless tan other wise known as the fake bake or fake tan, lasts between 2 to 10 days depending on the type of product and method used. During the 1920’s Dihydroxyacetone, a chemical found in self tanning products, was found to turn the skin brown but the first sunless suntan cream wasn’t developed until the sixties by Coppertone. By the time the eighties rolled around people were slathering the lotions and creams on their bodies only to find that they had turned orange rather than brown.

I remember my first experience with a sunless tanning lotion. Self tanners were easy to spot in those days thanks to that awful Halloween pumpkin orange glow we emitted. Just recently several laws have been passed to limit the use of UV tanning beds and so once again Americans have fallen back on the old favorite, suntan creams. Times have changed and technology has advanced so that we no longer have the orange dilemma. There are more sunless tanning brands out there than you can shake a stick at and the techniques are as varied as the products themselves. There are lotions, creams, sprays; pills, air brushing and accelerators just to mention a few. Whether you are spraying or smearing there are a few things you should know. Here are some great tips to getting the best canned tan on the beach.

1. Take a shower first. You can’t expect to get a good even tan if your skin is coated in dead cells, dust and grime, all of which we accumulate on a daily basis.

2. Prior to applying any sunless tanning product to your skin, refrain from shaving. The more sensitive your skin, the worst your results will be if you shave. Remember you are applying a chemical to your skin.

3. Exfoliate your skin while you shower. You don’t want to scrub away your skin but you will need to pay special attention to the elbows, knees, ankles, feet and neck areas. Steer clear of nylon or loofah scrubbers though as they are obvious to cause streaking.

4. Deodorant and antiperspirants cause self tanning products to streak. The best thing to do is make positive you have the air conditioner running so that the room stays cool or rinse off in a cool shower before applying.

5. Wear gloves during the application. There really is no other way to avoid having orange palms. If you chose not to wear gloves makes sure you wash your hands every few minutes and scrub vigorously with a nail brush to help rid of the stain.

6. There are a couple of shipshape tricks offered at sunless.com. One is to use a sponge paintbrush to apply the product. These are nifty little items usually found in any craft store or the paint department of Wal-mart. Simply spray the solution onto the sponge and rub on your body to eliminate streaks and other application mistakes. The other tip is to spend a baby wipe. Rinse a couple out in the sink and hang to dry. When they are completely dry spray with self tanning lotion or foam and wipe your body with it. Continue to spray the wipe as needed when it begins to dry out again.

7. Never apply any sunless tanning product the same day as an planned event or evening out. You never know what kind of disasters may arise from your self tanning adventure and you don’t want to be caught in public with unnatural skin color.

8. The best time to try self tanning is during the late winter when you can cover any mistakes with lots of clothing. Be sure to try different brands to find the one that suits you best and when you do your test session avoid covering the facial area until you know exactly what the outcome will look like.

9. Unless you’re a contortionist applying the tanners to your back is quite difficult. One easy method is to grasp a foam paint roller with a long handle on it. Do not try to substitute the foam for another material as foam is the only kind that works with this method. Apply the product to the roller and roll up and down your abet. If you’re too leery of attempting that simply employ the help of a friend or spouse.

10. The only way to believe your tan is to reapply the tanning solution every other day and moisturize on a daily basis. Your skin may dry out after repeated tannings so be sure to let the tan wear off completely after the third or fourth application.

If after all that, once you’ve scrubbed and moisturized you find that your tan has turned out very bad and you just want to get rid of it you still have draw of getting it off. It does take work and could possibly make your skin sore, but there is a map.

The most natural way to remove it is to just let time pass. It will eventually fade and disappear somewhere around 10 days later. During these times I think its best if you try to stay at home and avoid human contact because yes, people will notice. It’s your choice though, if you’d rather just wait it out you can but don’t expect it to go unnoticed.

The other way to remove the sunless tanner is pretty simple. When it comes to the face and neck areas baking soda does the trick. First get your face wet and then massage baking soda into the skin in microscopic circles. Sometimes makeup remover will even remove a bad fake tan from your face. For the rest of your body dip a wash cloth in hydrogen peroxide and scrub away the tan. Do a test patch first to decide whether or not your skin will be irritated by it. You can also coat your body in baby oil and then take a shower using baking soda once again to scrub and exfoliate the tan away.

If after you gave all that a try and you accumulate yourself stuck in the putrid shade of orange, scrutinize up it could be worst, you could be purple. If the tan refuses to come off then you might as well just accept it because there’s nothing in the world except for time that’s going to get rid of it. Self tanning products like Coppertone, Banana Boat, Clinique and others are merely a stain. They do not dye your flesh or provide you with permanent results. There’s always a risk involved and you never know what the results will be until you give it a try. Don’t contemplate the product by what you watch on someone else’s skin, everyone’s self tanning adventure is different.

Side by Side Comparison of Self Tanning Lotion Versus Spray Tans – Spray Tanning Lotion

In light of the clear and present danger presented by “fake and bake” tanning beds, many individuals have embarked upon a mission to uncover the best sunless tanning option currently available on the market. This quest typically leads individuals to the two most well-liked options: Self Tanning Lotion or Spray Tanning. While both of these tanning alternatives are likely to help you achieve a sun kissed glow, it is essential to understand the differences of both options so that you can make the most informed decision possible when choosing a healthy alternative that is right for you.

Spray tanning is a much safer and more natural way to achieve a bronze glow than that of a tanning bed. Spray tans are typically applied at a salon, and involve spraying color onto the top layer of your skin, in essence much like applying makeup to the skin. Spray tans do not earn a honest tan, and because of this typically only last a couple of days. As such, they are difficult to utilize for events involving travel of more than 24-48 hours, as they usually cannot be reapplied without going back into a salon. Spray tans can also be messy at times because the color will often come off on your clothing or bathroom towels.

Considerable like spray tanning, self tanning lotions are a much safer alternative to that of tanning beds. Self tanning lotions acquire dihydroxyaceton, otherwise known as “DHA,” which when combined with the naturally occurring amino acids found in your body produces melanoidins on the top layer of your skin. Melanoidins are brownish in color, hence resulting in a “gloomy tan.” Self tanning lotions have become extremely popular recently due to the low cost and flexibility of application. For example, self tanning lotions are perfect for travel, typically last five (5) to ten (10) days, and can be applied in the comfort of your own home versus having to go to a salon for application. There are currently several well-liked self tanners and self tanning lotions on the market including the Adonia Bronzing Serum which is known for producing a very natural looking tan. The key to self-tanning lotions is in the application. Horror stories involving streaking and orange hands and knees are usually the result of self tanning lotions that have been incorrectly applied. It is imperative to follow all directions and above all else, consume patience when applying self tanning lotions, as the results will be well worth it. Both sunless tanning lotions and spray tans are genuine alternatives to the potential dangers associated with tanning beds. Which one you choose comes down to personal preference but based on recent demand for self tanning lotions, the affordable prices and convenience of home application seem to be attracting a lot of attention from consumers.

Palm Beach Tanning Salon Review – Sunless Tanning Booth

Need a tan for an upcoming event? Want to keep your tan that you’ve worked so hard on this summer? I suggest going to Palm Beach Tanning Salon. It is located in Fairfax, Virginia off of West Ox Road. I have been tanning for six years and have tried just about every tanning salon in the set, but Palm Beach Tan stands out above all the rest.

The tanning salon is brightly lit and clean. In my experience the staff has always been very helpful and happy to answer any tanning questions or concerns I might have. The salon has more rooms than any other salon I’ve been to which keeps the wait down to a minimum. If you do find yourself waiting to tan the lobby has comfy chairs to sit in. they also provide some magazines you can read while you wait.

Sometimes it’s all about the details, and in this case Palm Beach tan didn’t leave those out! In the back of the salon is what I like to call the “Beauty Bar.” It’s a vanity that is set with a sizable mirror behind it. The vanity usually features hair ties, tissues; baby wipes, and sprays on deodorant. It’s the perfect spot to make sure you look great before you head out the door.

Some might argue that all tanning salons are the same, but I beg to differ. The salon hours are where Palm Beach really stands out of the crowd. They are begin Monday through Friday from 7AM to 11pm, Saturday 8 AM to 10 PM, and Sunday from 9 AM to 9PM. They have the longest hours compared to any other salon in the area. These hours are sure to fit any schedule!

Palm Beach offers five different levels of tanning. They are Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, and Mystic. They have a level for every costumer from someone who needs a tan for a special event, such as a wedding, to someone who just likes to be tan year round as well as various price points to fit every budget. If you tan year round be sure to check out the Premier Rewards Program. It’s a program that allows you to earn rewards the more months you tan.

Maybe tanning beds aren’t for you? Then try one of their sunless tanning booths. They have come a long blueprint over the years and are no longer a fake orange color. Palm Beach tan offers the Mystic Tan or the Versa Spa. Both allow you to pick your level of tan. If you’re nervous about the process they offer an instructional video on what to do, a pamphlet and the staff will even walk you back to the booth to explain and demonstrate what to do.

For more information you can visit www.palmbeachtan.com You can also stop by the salon and the difference for yourself. Palm Beach Tan is located in the Fairfax Towne Center. The address is 12158-A Fairfax Towne Centre, Fairfax, VA 22033.

A Fake Bake Junkie’s Review of Jet Tan Airbrush Tanning – Airbrush Tanning Reviews

As a “fake bake” addict, I relied on my healthy golden glow to define me, to make me feel young and beautiful, and as my personal “alone time” each and every day. When I was diagnosed with Lupus and strictly forbidden from anymore trips to the tanning salon, my world seemed to melt around me. Shallow, I know… But at 19 years old, I had finally outgrown my “ugly duckling” phase and had actually felt beautiful with this new golden glow. Desperate to hold my rich, golden tone; I set out in search of the perfect alternative. I have tried everything from bargain brand self tanners to the top of the line products, and as ashamed as I am for being fooled, have even tried the tanning pills. After years of weekly product experimentations, the salon began offering the Mystic spray tan. Finally I had thought. Less effort, more realistic, and a lower chance for mistakes. Boy was I evil. I was less than thrilled with the next generation of miracle tans and continued to slather those smelly, messy creams and lotions onto my body every couple of days.

On one particularly moody day as I moaned and groaned, fed up with the dramas involved in self tanning lotions, I could hear a voice echoing from the television set. It almost seemed to be talking directly to me…”Are you tired of messy lotions that stain your hands, and leave you streaky or orange? Are you tired of spending a fortune in costly salon appointments? Of standing in a cloud of spray? Or damaging your skin with unhealthy UV rays? I stood there entranced, nodding my head hypnotized as I peered around the corner to see a pale woman with what resembled a blow dryer. As she hovered the tool over her body I watched her skin miraculously go from creamy pale to a beautiful and realistic golden brown in an instant and with such ease. Before I had even finished applying my messy self tanning cream, I literally ran for the computer to look into this current Jet Tan airbrush tanning product. I was amazed and decided that I absolutely must try it, but didn’t want to spend $60.00 on a product that had a good chance of not being what I was expecting. After searching for product reviews from real people, not paid actors and bargain shopping, I found HSN( Home Shopping Network) and ebay to have the best bargains. After a few days I had finally decided to engage the plunge and purchased the complete Jet Tan system on ebay for $30.00 which included shipping and insurance. When my Jet Tan system arrived, I immediately stopped what I had been doing to shower, exfoliate, and tan. I felt a little like a car that was in the body shop getting a new paint job(Uh Oh, Better Get Maco!), but I was amazed by how realistic looking the tan was. The color was not only heavenly, but the even tone and ease of use was new to me. It took very little time or effort and for the first time in years I was able to tan my hands and feet in a way that still appeared natural. Anyone that uses self tanners know that to make the tops of your hands and feet tan and natural looking is difficult, if not impossible with creams and lotions, but with Jet Tan I didn’t have to hide my feet in sneakers and could actually wear sandals without embaressment. I was hooked… At least for the moment I was.

The best way to build up to a dismal, yet natural looking tan is to apply the product every other day until you have reached your personal “perfect color” so after my first application and complete satisfaction, I cleaned out my airbrush tool as the directions said to and decided to go for application number two after skipping a day. As I loaded up my Jet tan tool with the airbrush solution and pulled the trigger I heard a sputter and a spit and felt a icy air float across my skin, but no color. I pressed my finger against the opening to build up pressure in the line and tried again. This time I watched again as I magically transformed my calf into that of a dark, golden beach dweller. Phew, I thought… Just a momentary apprehension. I continued up my leg, still hypnotized and in fancy with my newfound product when it began to sputter and spit again. This time a simple trick didn’t work and I began to see bubbles forming in the solution. It was just like our kids when they decide to blow bubbles into their milk rather than drink from the straw. Here I stood now, in awe and upset with only a quarter of my body a deep bronze. I tried everything to get it going again, followed all of the directions, and watched the instructional dvd once again, but got nowhere. Finally fed up I decided to take the tool apart and fix it myself. Upon opening the gadget I could perceive no reason for the clog or reversal of spray, but can say that the airbrush gun is the cheapest, simplest thing I have ever seen. Although that fact is evident upon first glance, it becomes more obvious after looking into the “motor” of the machine. I truly felt my child could have built it. I did somehow, by pure magic get the tool working again. How? I really don’t know, but hey it was working again so I was mumble to have an all over bronze once again.

My review and best advice though is this.. The Jet Tan solution is the best, most realistic looking color I have found yet, and applying by means of airbrushing is the most incredible and real final view I have ever seen, but skip out on the Jet Tan tanning tool unless you are able to find it at an incredibly low price. I do still use the Jet Tan solution, but have given up on the tool itself. I have instead found portable and professional airbrush tools being sold for as low as $50.00 and am getting ready to order one. Although this may seem silly to some, to the rest of us who are determined to have a beautiful tan and have spent a fortune trying to salvage the perfect one, it’s a relief to finally stop searching.

The best prices I have found for this product as of January 18, 2006 are ….

HSN.com — Although the Home Shopping Network does not offer the airbrush tool, they do offer the solution, barrier cream(to keep your palms from becoming discolored), exfoliating cream, and facial bronzer at ample prices.
A Jet Tan Refill Kit or Tanning Trio is only $16.95

8 oz. Jet Tan Instant Airbrush Tanning Solution – this self-tanner gives you color in two ways. First, with an instant bronzer that dries in 5-10 minutes and is visible the moment you apply the product. Next, with a self-tanning ingredient that reacts with the amino acids in your skin to get a gorgeous natural tan in about 3-4 hours

2 oz. Jet Tan Instant Tanner and Bronzer For The Face – designed specifically to instantly give the face a golden bronze look in seconds and a self-tan that develops in about 3-4 hours. The beauty of this self-tanner is that it allows you to see where and how it is applied, which prevents streaking and gives instant color

1 oz. Barrier Cream – the answer to extra browning in areas that tend to attract too much color during the airbrush tanning process, such as the cuticles, nails, knees, elbows, palms of hands and soles of feet. Simply apply a thin layer of the Barrier Cream to these areas prior to airbrush tanning

And on ebay Jet Tan products can be found at the lowest possible prices I have seen yet, but as would be expected with an auction site, it can be a hit or miss as too whether Jet Tan can even be found on ebay at any given time. If you are interested in trying Jet Tan Airbrush products, but don’t want to spend tons of money trying it out, keep your eyes peeled for the occasional on ebay. Upon my last search just moments ago, there was a complete Jet Tan system listed on ebay for the current bid of $15.00. I would definitely treasure any and/ or all feedback, hints, tips and tricks readers have pertaining to self tanning or Jet Tan. Good Luck and Cheerful Tanning.

Sunless Tanning Lotion Application Tips for Beginners – Tanning Salons Tips

Using sunless tanning lotions is a great way to achieve tan for people who cannot afford to go to the tanning salons and for people living in areas, which never win enough sunlight.

This article has sunless tanning lotion application tips for beginners. These tips are going to be apt from the beginning until the waste of the process.

Sunless Tanning Lotion Application Tips for the first phase of tanning

Couple of Days before applying the sad Tanning Lotion

Exfoliate

Exfoliation of dead skin cells is extremely necessary for the tanning lotion to set well onto the skin. Any drugstore exfoliator will do the job. Start exfoliating a couple of days before the application of sunless tanning lotion. In the shower, use cotton washcloth instead of the nylon pouf.

Moisturize

Dry patches on the skin soak up the tanning lotion and the result is a blotchy tan. So start moisturizing the skin liberally several days before the tan. The results of sunless tanning lotion are the best on the well-hydrated skin.

Stop shaving

People with sensitive skin should stop shaving the areas to be tanned a week before applying tanning lotion. Applying tanning lotion on freshly shaved skin can lead to irritability.

Get help for the back

The back is hard to tan properly without any help. So do not hesitate to call a friend to ask him/her to do the job for you.

Sunless Tanning Lotion Application Tips for the second phase of tanning

Immediately before applying the sunless tanning lotion

Cool down the surroundings

If the surroundings are hot or humid then the skin might start sweating. This condition is not favorable for applying sunless tanning lotions. Dripping sweat can cause a streaked tan, which of course is undesirable.

Cool down the skin

If you have taken a hot bath prior to applying sunless tanning lotion, then conclude off with a blast of cold water. The hot skin too can lead to a streaked tan.

Sunless Tanning Lotion Application Tips for the third phase of tanning

While applying the sunless tanning lotion

Go slow and systematically

The process of tanning by sunless tanning lotion needs a mighty amount of time. Do not rush the process. Also start with an area, execute and then proceed with the next.

Handle the tricky areas wisely

Elbows, knees, hands, and feet are the tricky areas while tanning. Usually they tend to get too dark after the tanning lotion is dried. To avoid that, either dilute the tanning lotion for these areas or wash the lotion after applying for 5 to 7 minutes.

Sunless Tanning Lotion Application Tips for the fourth phase of tanning

After applying the sunless tanning lotion

Beware of staining clothes and/or sheets

The tanning lotions do not dry quickly. If you wear anything without waiting for the lotion to dry, the cloth might be stained. So wait for the lotion to dry completely before getting clothed.

How Sunless Tanning Works – Tanning Self Tanner

With the risk of sun cancer evident in traditional tanning methods such as direct sunlight and tanning booths, sunless tanning products have become a celebrated alternative to getting that golden tan glow.

So how do these creams, lotions and sprays turn our skin from pasty white to a crisp tan? This article will explain how these sunless tanning products change the color of our skin.

Understanding the Skin

To understand how our skin can change colors, we first have to understand the skin. As you may remember from high school physiology class, the human skin is made up of two main layers: the inner, or dermis and outer, or epidermis.

When talking about tanning, we are more interested in the epidermis. The epidermis itself has two layers: the stratum basale and the stratum corneum. The deeper layer, the stratum basale, is the one affected by tanning in the sun. The outer epidermis is the stratum corneum. This is the layer where the shaded tanning products react.

So, now we know where the change takes place: on the surface of the outermost layer of skin. But, although each self tanner temporarily dyes the outer layer of skin, each sunless tanning product works slightly different.

Understanding the Chemicals & How Our Skin Changes

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, the most effective sunless tanning products are ones containing the chemical dihydroxyacetone, better known as DHA. DHA is a colorless sugar, and as it interacts with the dead cells in the stratum corneum, a color change occurs. Color resulting from the DHA ingredient lasts about five to seven days. DHA can be found in shadowy tanning lotions, creams, gels and sprays. Check product labels to sight if the product contains DHA.

Another ingredient found in self-tanners an amino acid called tyrosine. Makers of these products claim that tyrosine increases melanin formation in the skin, which then accelerates the tanning process. In fact, you may have heard these products referred to as tanning accelerators.

Finally, another form of sunless tanning is the bronzer. Bronzers can come as powders and moisturizers, and are often also combined with other self-tanning methods. A bronzer applied alone creates a tan that can easily be removed with soap and water. Bronzers work more like a make-up, tinting the skin temporarily. However, as noted, other self-tanning products can contain bronzers to give an instant color, while the other chemicals take longer to appear. So, a bronzer can act alone or help out with a fellow sunless tanning lotion.

Why Our Tan Can Disappear

Ever wonder why or how a tan fades? Going back to the layers of skin, it is important to understand that millions of dead skin cells leave the body every day. This is why our tans disappear. Since sunless tanning products work on the outermost layer of skin, the color will dissipate in less time than a regular suntan. We actually have a unique epidermis every month or so! So, if sunless tanning is the only method of tanning you are using, it is critical to maintain the tan by using your specific product every few days.
